Secret Key Lemon Sparkling Peeling Gel Review

Secret Key Lemon Sparkling Peeling GelSecret Key Lemon Sparkling Peeling Gel is one of the Korean brand’s more popular products. I received it recently in a Memebox and after using for a few weeks, am ready to give a review!

Secret Key’s Lemon Sparkling Peeling Gel is an exfoliator of the new “gommage” type variety, that claims to use lemon extract and lemon water to gently “peel” (aka exfoliate) the skin, and Vitamin C to brighten.

Secret Key Lemon Sparkling Peeling Gel Review

Did I like this? Nary a bit. “Gommage” is a style of gentle physical exfoliation that involves applying the product to dry skin and rubbing, upon which it curls up into little balls that rub off the dead skin cells.  I alternate between physical and chemical exfoliators, so was curious to try this trend.

The product comes out of the tube as a white cream with a light texture. You apply it to a cleansed, dried face (so this would  be the second or even third step in your routine, after you’ve thoroughly removed all makeup). As soon as I rubbed it on my dry face, it did begin to coalesce into little balls on my face. Rub for a couple of minutes and then remove with water.

I was surprised to find that this definitely felt too rough on my skin – I’m not opposed to all scrubs, in fact I use one at least once a week I’ll mention below – but as soon as the little balls began to form, my skin began to feel tight and overly exfoliated – and that’s with using a relatively small amount of the product. I also saw no immediate brightening effect, and after using a number of times, no long-term brightening effect either.

A good exfoliater immediately makes your skin look smoother and brighter; this did not. Granted, I didn’t take seriously the inclusion of Vitamin C to brighten – cleansers and exfoliators stay on the skin such a short time it’s very hard for ingredients to actually sink in – but I was hoping the scrubbing effect, sloughing off dead cells and aiding in cell turnover, would brighten my skin.

Skin Type Recommendations:

On the whole, I can’t recommend this, particularly to sensitive skin – my skin, while dry, is not particularly sensitive, and still felt over-exfoliated.  Instead of this, I’d recommend Pacifica’s Rice Bright Cleansing Paste, a gentle exfoliating cleanser I use a few times a week that gives immediate brightening results.
